Chennai Police have altered the case involving the death of a 23-year-old accountant from abetment of suicide to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following allegations that he was assaulted and forcibly questioned over a suspected financial discrepancy.
The victim, identified as Akash, died after falling from the fourth floor of a travel company’s office in Anna Nagar on Sunday. Police said he had allegedly jumped while attempting to escape an assault during a confrontation over suspected misappropriation of around ₹40 lakh.
The owner of the travel firm, 57-year-old Sukumar, was initially arrested on August 1 on charges of abetment of suicide. He was later granted bail on Saturday. However, after Akash succumbed to his injuries, police invoked a more serious charge and re-arrested Sukumar on Sunday before producing him before a court.
According to investigators, Akash was allegedly confined to a room on the fourth floor of the office premises, where he was questioned by Sukumar and two lawyers regarding the suspected financial irregularities. Police said they are currently searching for the two lawyers, who are reportedly absconding.
Akash’s family has demanded the immediate arrest of the two lawyers before accepting his body. His sister has alleged that those involved in the incident should be held accountable for his death.
Police officials said the investigation into the suspected financial misappropriation will be conducted separately after the inquiry into Akash’s death is completed.
The case has drawn attention over allegations of unlawful confinement, intimidation and the circumstances that led to the young accountant’s fatal fall. Further investigation is underway.
