Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited Karur on Friday to meet the families affected by the 2025 stampede tragedy and hand over compassionate appointment orders, while also participating in government and party programmes in the district.
The visit marked the Chief Minister’s first major engagement in Karur since the incident, which occurred during a political event organised by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and resulted in the deaths of 41 people. The tragedy had triggered a wider debate over crowd management, event safety protocols, and accountability.
During the visit, Vijay met families of those who lost their lives and distributed government job appointment orders as part of rehabilitation measures announced for the victims’ dependants. The initiative had attracted political debate, with some opposition parties raising questions over the timing and process while the investigation into the incident continues.
The Chief Minister’s schedule also included government welfare activities and the launch of development initiatives in the district. Among the projects was the foundation stone laying for a major footwear manufacturing facility expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities in the region.
Authorities made extensive security arrangements ahead of the visit, with officials taking measures to manage crowds and ensure smooth movement during the Chief Minister’s programmes.
The Karur visit comes at a politically significant time, as the state government continues to balance relief measures for families affected by the tragedy with ongoing legal and investigative proceedings. The Supreme Court had earlier considered a petition challenging the proposed visit and related public engagements, but dismissed the plea seeking restrictions on the Chief Minister’s interaction with victims’ families.
The government has maintained that support measures for affected families are intended to provide long-term assistance, while political parties continue to debate the handling of the aftermath and accountability surrounding the incident.
