Tamil Nadu DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was released after being arrested by Chennai Police in connection with a controversy surrounding remarks allegedly made during a public gathering in Thanjavur. The incident triggered a political storm in the state, with opposition parties accusing Stalin of making inappropriate comments involving actor Trisha Krishnan.

The controversy began during a protest meeting where Stalin was addressing supporters over the Cauvery water dispute. During the speech, sections of the crowd reportedly raised slogans referring to Trisha, following which Stalin’s response was interpreted by some as a derogatory reference to the actor. The remarks quickly spread on social media, leading to criticism from political rivals and public figures.

Stalin, however, defended his statement, claiming that his comments were linked to the Cauvery issue and had been taken out of context. His supporters maintained that the controversy was being politically exaggerated, while opposition parties argued that public figures must be held responsible for their statements.

Following complaints filed by political groups, including the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), police registered a case against Stalin under relevant sections related to alleged offensive remarks and harassment. He was subsequently taken into custody from his residence in Chennai and questioned by authorities.

After the legal proceedings, Stalin was released, with DMK leaders calling the arrest an attempt to target the party politically. The party accused its opponents of misrepresenting his remarks and using the controversy to gain political mileage.

Opposition leaders, meanwhile, maintained that the issue was not about political rivalry but about ensuring accountability for statements made by elected representatives and senior political figures.

The episode has added another layer to the ongoing political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with both the DMK and opposition parties using the controversy to strengthen their positions ahead of upcoming electoral battles. The legal proceedings and political fallout from the incident are expected to continue in the coming days.
