Vikram Solar is set to invest ₹15,037 crore to establish a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, as Tamil Nadu strengthens its position as a hub for renewable energy and clean technology manufacturing.

The Tamil Nadu government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vikram Solar for the proposed facility, which is expected to support the state’s renewable energy ecosystem while creating new industrial and employment opportunities in the region.

The investment comes as demand for energy storage solutions grows, driven by the increasing adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. Battery storage systems are expected to play a critical role in managing intermittency, improving grid stability, and enabling greater integration of renewable power into electricity networks.

The Gangaikondan site is already emerging as a key manufacturing location for Vikram Solar. The company recently commissioned a new solar module manufacturing facility at the same location, rolling out its first photovoltaic module from the plant. The facility is designed with advanced automation and smart manufacturing capabilities and is part of Vikram Solar’s broader strategy to expand domestic solar manufacturing capacity.

The company’s expansion plans include building a more integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem, covering areas such as solar cells, wafers and ingots alongside module production. This approach aims to strengthen supply chain resilience and reduce dependence on imported components.

Tamil Nadu has increasingly attracted investments in renewable energy manufacturing due to its industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce and growing clean energy capacity. The proposed BESS facility is expected to further support the state’s ambitions in energy transition and advanced manufacturing.

The project also aligns with India’s broader push to develop domestic capabilities in battery storage technology, which is considered essential for supporting renewable energy growth, electric mobility and future power infrastructure requirements.

With this investment, Vikram Solar is expanding beyond traditional solar module manufacturing towards a broader clean energy portfolio, positioning energy storage as a key component of its future growth strategy.
