US President Donald Trump has said the United States is engaged in talks with Iran, describing the negotiations as Tehran’s “last chance” to reach an agreement before facing severe military consequences.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed discussions with Iran were “going on right now” and warned that the opportunity for diplomacy was rapidly closing. He said he preferred a negotiated settlement but indicated that military action remained an option if the talks failed.
In one of his strongest warnings yet, Trump said Iran faced the prospect of “decapitation” if it did not agree to a deal, referring to the possibility of targeted military action against the country’s leadership. He described the current negotiations as Iran’s final opportunity to avoid further escalation.
Trump also claimed that regional partners, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, were supporting efforts to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran. According to the US President, the immediate focus is on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, followed by broader discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.
However, Iranian officials have publicly denied that direct negotiations with the United States are taking place. Tehran maintains that its current discussions are limited to Oman and relate to maritime navigation and shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz rather than broader diplomatic engagement with Washington.
The conflicting statements come amid heightened tensions in the Gulf, where concerns over shipping security have intensified following recent incidents near the Strait of Hormuz. The uncertainty has also contributed to volatility in global oil markets, as traders closely monitor developments in the strategically important waterway.
While Trump expressed optimism that diplomacy could still succeed, he made it clear that the window for negotiations would not remain open indefinitely. “This is a last chance,” he said, reiterating that the US was prepared to take stronger measures if no agreement is reached.
